I stopped believing in religious practices when I was around 23. Two years later I went through severe depression, which led to reading up on a lot of psychology and trying to understand how hope and faith worked. There are a lot of things that are beyond our control and believing that a God will take care of those (conditions applied) is a coping mechanism for us to not be in perpetual anxiety about everything. Understanding this led me from being non- religious to a skeptic or agnostic. Now I'm agnostic somedays and atheist on others. I'm pretty sure the influence of depression is the only thing keeping me from being psychologically strong enough to be an atheist all time.
