Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.
The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.
Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.
Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.

UNITED 328 Engine Failure! WHAT CHECKLISTS did the pilots use? Explained by CAPTAIN JOE

What striked me at the very first glance when you where reading out the memory items is how well placed those items are actually. Each item is located further "down" the cockpit on a single axis with minimal offset (A/T). You move from the glareshield at the top down to the fire extinguishers at the very bottom. I think its safe to say it is by design and shows how much work gets put into cockpit ergonomics - even (or especially?) for such instances. Its something you(me, as aviationenthusiast but not pilot) would rarely notice. Frankly speaking its mind blowing to me.
I saw that shroud and thought "oooooh I could make a room size grow light out of that" yeah that'd get it done💚 👌
I'm surprised that people still fly United. I flew them once, never again. Worst service of any airline I've ever flown.
I'm surprised the pilot didn't dump any fuel
I'm surprised the pilot didn't dump any fuel
Very well explained to common persons like me. thanks
I know nothing about aircraft but this is still really interesting, He does a good job of making this normally boring topic interesting :)
GREATEST respect.
That ATC guy was outstanding!
Capt. Joe what do you know about AAL2292 that had the close encounter with UFO over NM?
that shows that well trained pilots are indispensable on aircrafts. forget about automatic flown aircrafts.
They hit birds
United airlines mustn’t do any maintenance
Oh my God! I live 20 minutes from where the inlet landed! I'd heard about this and seen pictures but didn't know it was so close to me. (BTW it's BRoomfield, not BLoomfield)
So we're not going to talk about the fact they were headed to Hawaii, and if they'd gotten off the mainland and this had happened they'd be stranded!? 😦
5:55 they already were close to the mountains intact the engine ring landed right next to the Rocky Mountains in the foothills in BROOMfield not BLOOM LOL 😂 I live around the corner from were the engine ring thing landed! And we’re a 15 min drive from the mountains so a 1-2 min flight
It was interesting to see the plane fly around to what looked like the furthest runway. I'm not sure it was only checklist as the reason for going that far around. The approach to Denver airport 26 that the pilot took is mostly over fields. All the other approaches have much, much higher population densities. Kudos to the pilot for taking the route in that also considered the lowest potential for ground injury if anything were to get much worse on approach.
A FedEx plane lost an engine cowling in a Memphis neighborhood, yet it couldn't be found. The wife saw it in the front yard, thought it was something her husband brought home, and dragged it into the garage.
They need to make that ring around the main fan blades kevlar, maybe with ceramic and kevlar. A level IV armor ring of Kevlar and ceramic to prevent casualties and extra damage to the aircraft!
The engine shut down checklist is a read from a quick reference card (QRC) NOT from memory. Actions like these require the other pilot to confirm correct lever or switch is being moved, not just a sequence run from memory. The flying pilot would also guard the adjacent controls for "good engine" with hand to prevent pilot running checklist from potentially shutting down wrong motor.
It already happened cuz is 2021
War Thunder taught me not to turn into a dead engine
This was a good explanation until the end "this is why we need a two man cockpit". This is 2021. Women have been pilots for a very long time now. Unlearned comments such as these is why women make up 5% of all pilots, and continues to decrease as we have moved forward in most all other industries except aviation.
With best wishes as always...
As a professional airline pilot for 30 years. Nice video. Well done.
Boeing, Pratt + Whitney, and Rolls Royce all outsourced to India.
excellent explanation- as a Quality Manager/ Engineer/Inspector in aviation for many years, we all do, all of us, put safety first- but Boeing has its work cut out to make everyone feel that way- real quick, especially after the 737 Max total breakdown...
I'm amazed that no one was killed either in the air or ground with heavy items like inlet cowl, fan cowls, TRs, etc

First time I've come across your channel Cap'n Joe; I'm an instant fan, this presentation is awesome! Cheers
Like button, checked.
That’s the moment you should appreciate the training people go through.
1.1K people didn't like his tie, I guess.
11:00 multible grammar issues lol
Possible cause? Didn't buy Rolls Royce.
Sorry but I can't resist this ... "No 'i' in Team"!? Err yes there is ... 'Tîm' ... Welsh for 'team' and pronounced the exact same way! Oops! 😱😍😍

Good aircraft!
Truly illuminating, thanks for the insight.
I'm very surprised the passengers did not panic after looking out the windows and seeing in horror their engine mangled and in flames.
This is a great video. Q. How far can the plane fly on one engine, at that speed and altitude? And could not return to the departure airport. Also, Was a fuel dump called for here?
Awesome summary Joe, and awesome pilots flying!
Girls and boys? Is that what flight crew call cabin crew?
A seven hours flight time probably does not carry much fuel for a overweight landing. That's why they did not perform jettison fuel...
After my wife heard about this she said that she didn't want to fly for a while. I told her that this makes me even more confident in air travel. After all a 2 engine plane had one blow apart while still climbing. A time when it still needed power. Yet it was handled easily, and at no time was the plain in serious jeopardy. To me this shows how well trained everyone involved is.
I would be so scared of the engine just falling off from burning that much. What would happen in that case? Does the plane lose its balance and stops it from flying stable?
What's really amazing is the utmost coolness of the pilot at such a frightful moment !!
Question: Was the plane overweight for landing? Did it realease fuel to lower its weight?
Congratulations. I am Brazilian and I discovered today your channel. You have a clean English, talks slow, and it´s good for our comprehension
Why aren't checklists automated?!
Thanks for explaining this
Teamwork and professionalism got this baby back down on the ground safely. Great work....
Feels good to have two engines.
Did he say Moderate turbulence? I heard "wapwap".
Interesting... i work at Pratt. Seems like these older engines need more frequent inspections.
I hope that they never ever end up having commercial airplanes be drones with the pilots in the ground a pilot really needs to be in the air so that he can monitor the situations have a good day bye-bye
Yes, 2 crew is necessary, maybe even 3 to check the systems, really good performance by the pilot, and exellent explanation by you
Wow!....I love your explanation....so easy for a layman to understand, thank you!....
The temporary caravan centrally tire because jump jekely snore via a flowery pail. terrific, organic fertilizer
I learnt it alot from this thanks you
fantastic
Great explanation, factual and on key. I flew the 777 for 21 years at American as a Line CKA, over 17,000 hrs in type 200-300 great plane. Doodoo happens. Thats why we brief on every Takeoff, plan for an engine failure so there are no surprises. Every landing brief a Go Around that way again, No surprises. Look forward to following you.
This is why you cannot have unmanned ATC and autonomous pilotless aircraft with souls on board - people are able to respond to rapidly changing situations and innovate a creative solution to the problem. The cargo is not expendable.

Excellent informative show
If you tie his hands to his sides, he can't talk.
50:50 chance other engine could've failed too! Always felt safer in a 747 1:4 chance
Cap, didnt they needed to dump fuel for the landing weight ?
Strap a jackhammer to the side and it's a slightly oversized cockring.
It went boom.
Never been patronised so hard with praying hands before... how much do you hate your audience...
Bravo Zulu\(^o^)/ How do you say ”Job well done" in German? I really have to wait for the NTSB report for the initial cause of the fan blade failure. Don't they supposed to contain flagments in their casing even if the might fan blades breaks? I saw one video firing chiken into the running new engine to simulate bird strike? Thank you (every time and always) for sharing your video.
Love this
Loved it. Understood most of it even though in dont know sh** :D
Perfect content 👍
Technology is great until it breaks. Thank God they landed safely.
these are the only engines boeing built with hollow fan blades..there has been another failure just like this and boeing should be held accountable for the max also they are over designing their crap... sorry had to vent ...... did not watch this video... there done my deed
My message would be: "We have some fuel on board and zero souls. Sorry, I don't believe in your dogma. We do have some passengers."
Considering the engine was still burning upon landing, it is a VERY good thing this did not happen very near the ground (takeoff), or far out over the ocean.
"what more could you ask for" how about your burn that necktie
I was listen twice and I didn't heard a fire bell! 4:20
This happened over my town! I heard it explode
Very good coverage many thanks for your efforts
Hi Captain Joe I got a question for you is it true that the car is the same thing as a stick shift just like controlling a plane by doing the throttle
Made in USA
The engine package done everything it was supposed to do during a fan blade separation.
It's Broomfield, Colorado. Not Bloomfield. Great video I live close by.
Thumps up for the Pilot, Copilot, cabin crew and all the ATC Crews. Amazing story, cannot not believe. God bless them. This will be a second life for most of them. Thank God.
The Denver Airport is one of the few I am familiar with. I am much more familiar with the old Stapleton. I spent a weekend there during the blizzard of 1982. This was a very interesting video. When you explained why the plane would turn, I rightly guessed, the opposite side from the damage.
Good summary. I thought captains had four bars though....🤔
Did this guy ever cover that one passenger jet a couple years ago that landed with its front gear down and perpendicular to the aircraft? Just wondering. I remember that "landing" and obviously everyone remembers the landing the Hudson
I agree with your 2 man cockpit statement. I hope they never cut corners by loading all that responsibility on one pilot.
Joe, I'm an Airman. Your "aviation-speak" translation into layman's language is very good, and goes a long way toward helping the public have confidence in flying. Nicely done!
Great explanation. Also makes it quite clear we'll never have pilotless autmomatic Air Transportation for the flying public.
Thank you Captain Joe for all you do!
What does "Heavy" mean in 328 heavy??
It's a US designation meaning the aircraft is 136 tonnes or more.
