22 000 عدد المشاهدات 135 ألف

After reading the book "Jump Attack" by Tim Grover (Michael Jordan's trainer of 15 years) and watching the ongoing documentary "The Last Dance", I had a question. How high does MJ jump? After researching and delving deeper into the topic, I found out theres a lot of confusion on how high MJ jumped. With a high degree of certainty I can tell you how high Michael Jordan jumped. And it's not to debunk common myths.

It's obvious MJ could do 46-48 inches. In every single jump you've shown, he's keeping in mind where the rim is and actually stopping or adjusting himself so that his head doesn't hit the rim. In the play where he makes that block, it's not just his head that hits the backboard. Look at it carefully. His SHOULDER actually reaches the bottom of the backboard. The average human head is 8 inches tall and for tall people it's 9 inches. If we give him 3 inches from the bottom of his chin to his shoulder, he was a full foot above the bottom of the backboard, or 10 feet, 6 inches or 126 inches. 6'6" is 78 inches. 126 - 78 = 48 inches.

He was just over 6'4 so he was jumping about 38 inches when his head hit the backboard. Don't you know, they always exaggerate their height but at least two inches.

On that block it is more like his shoulder hitting the backboard. His head was way above the backboard and he was ducking to try and miss it. I think he did well to maintain his vert whilst putting on muscle weight. That's what the trainer did IMO

its because jordan wont brag about his total leaping ability in a game because as he always says it, if it wasnt necessary...why he should do it...hes not just like the players now...always bragging about their jumping ability by jumping head above the rim but never even have a skills to be a great player...just luke jordan..jordan have all the skills and talent and athleticism and mental toughness and will...he has it all..complete player

Not knowing the actual science or number is part of the mythology. It’s just like Bruce Lee. Is he really as fast, powerful and deadly as people who worked with him claimed him to be? Can MJ really fly that high? Part of their greatness is the mystery of their story. Like the heroes of mythology.

He is jumping 45 without help. with all the technology and training programs (as seen on youtube and other media) for Jordan to gain a simple 3 inches would be a piece of cake working with an elite trainer. Doing this by 30 also would be a no brainer. Now the person you need to look at is wilt chamberlain. His ego alone he would say he is jump 70 inches. No big man that tall has that ability. Look at the highest vertical jump of a center they are all pretty close then wilt is like 15in above all of them? Centers dont have the driving force down then up, they are to big and they are carrying a lot more weight. Like the strong bodybuilder that weighs 260lbs vs 170lbs bodybuilder doing pull ups. Who do you think wins?

This is STORY is Total BS... THE Vertical-Jump is MEASURED WITHOUT Running or WITHOUT Moving the FEET before JUMPING... NOTE: The Type of Training USED on Jordan during that time-period, had absolutely NOTHING to do with his JUMPING Ability,.... DNA is WHY JORDAN was a WORLD-CLASS-Power-Athlete... I was personally was told by Buzz Peterson, Jordan's College Room-mate at UNC that Jordan only had a Vertical-Jump with NO-Movement of 34 to 36 inches on different testing days... The Vertical-Jump-TEST for evaluating Vertical-Jump is WITHOUT Movement (The Athlete being tested cannot move his feet, the athletes must dip down then jump as high as possible). SO again this is a HYPE Snake-Oil Story... AND! The type of training JORDAN did with his Strength-Coach is TOTAL BS, YEA the type of training JORDAN was doing with his Strength-Coach during his time with the BULL had-NO-WHAT-SO-EVER Transfer-Of-Training-Effect... [Transfer Of Training Effect DEFINED] The term Transfer-of-Training-Effect can be used to describe the degree of performance adaptation that results from an exercise or method when training an athlete. Type of exercise selection along with periodization (sets, reps, load, length, duration) are the most important factors when designing a program to develop a power-athlete. The type of exercise and dosage that is applied to develop the performance abilities (sprinting, changing direction, and jumping) of an athlete determines the performance adaptation result (Stone, M., Stone, M., Sands, W. 2007, p.171). In order for the transfer of training effect to be successful (maximize potential) when training a power athlete, the exercise/exercises selected must develop relative & absolute strength and must exhibit a high rate of force development and power output. Methods used by weightlifters and track & field athletes provide that type of stimulus needed for a transfer of training effect to occur when training a power-athlete. AGAIN, JORDAN'S JUMP-TRAINING AT THE BULLS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS JUMPING ABILITY (NO-TRANSFER-OF-TRAINING-EFFECT... Mental Toughness? Yea Right He cannot stop smoking Cigars... Give me a break...

Jordan hitting the back board -he was on his way down and hit hi head a few inches on his head so that alone was about 41/42 and he was coming down so 45 without going for max hei can hit the tght. However, I have seen a world class high jumper 6 2 white kid (Olympic silver medallists) jump with his whole head over the rim. Many high jumpers can hit the top of the backboard. World clas High jumper can get serious height

36 inches on the block were his head hit the backboard? He didn't skim the top of his head against the bottom underside of the backboard. The backboard hit him square in between the shoulder blades. Luckily the contact to his head was secondary and incidental or the injury would have been severe. But if he is 6'6 and the bottom of the backboard is 9'6, and he hit the backboard with his shoulders, then the jump was more like 46 inches, not 36

You still have to keep in mind that 6 feet 5 is tall. So when you say, 6 foot 5 guard. He's a tall guy playing the short player's position. There were several player whom could jump out the roof. Skywalker Thompson was a few inches shorter and played same position. But his jumping without a running start, was scary.

How can somebody make a video asking a question that was already answered in a published book and then do some kind of analysis where all is says is "Assume this, assume that?" Look, the trainer was there and the trainer had stats because that's how he judged what was and was not affective. If he said it, assume it's true and make a video about something interesting that you might actually be able to figure out, not something that was stated by an authoritative witness.

Please check out the apex of MJ's fist pump jump after hitting "The shot" in Cleveland. I've analyzed it and estimated that he is at least chin level with the rim. It needs to be looked at professionally. The adrenaline of the moment makes it one of the highest jumps of his career.

Once he left the ground he had no more ability to stay in the air than anyone else. He just jumped really high and had spectacular body control. He made it look like he was flying! This analysis is weird, especially regarding him hitting his head on the backboard in college. He really had his shoulder at backboard level, which would imply his head was probably 10 inches higher or about 10ft4, which would be a 46 inch vertical on that particular jump.

When jordan was at NOrth Carolina Jordan did not hit the top of his head on the backboard. He hit the back of the backboard at ear level, WHILE HE WAS DUCKING his head to try avoiding the backboard. In all likelihood Jordan’s top of his head was at rim level... indicating jordan jumped at least 6 inches higher than the bottom of the backboard. This means he must have jumped 42+ inches. My guess is that he was at 45 inches in college

45, 48, 50... If a 6´6"+ guy is in the upper 30´s the exact number doesn´t really matter. The rim is only 10´ so at 6´6" a guys maximum standing reach is going to be between 8´5" and 8´9" so that puts a guy with a 38 inch running hitting about 12´... The top of the backboard is 13´... What matter more is how quickly he can get to 11 feet, how minimal a joint angle or gather do you need to get to 11 feet, how much body control and balance do you have at 11 feet and how long can you stay there after contact. Rudy Gobert has a standing reach of 9´9" So a 6´6" guy with an 8´7" You have to get to 30" before he gets to 15" then you have to be able to stay there after initial contact in order to finish over the top of him or be able to move the ball and finish around him. If you have a 50" vert but lack the rest you will not be able to apply your 50" vert to high level (professional) basketball. You´ll be a great exhibition dunker, and a lay-up line legend but that won´t translate to competitive basketball at that level.

Getting 48 on vert test and in a game is way different a vert test is just that, a vert test where you do nothing but that no fatigue and no ball in your hand, in a game there is fatigue plus you don’t try to jump your highest but are just jumping as high as you need to. In a game was he jumping 48 in on a dunk? Most likely 40-46 max but he can definitely get 48 in on a vert test easy and if he trained for it as they do these days and had modern shoes compared to heavy ass 1984 shoes might even get 49-50

As far as I'm concerned, that dunk is impossible. I know I'm seeing it but I still don't believe it!!!

He actually had to bend his neck to the side to avoid banging his head on that one. A couple of baseline alley-oops he did in his early years - it’d be great to see a rim-level camera shot of those. * Wasn’t that dunk called the the up-and-under? His best one was the ‘88 version - he HAD to do his best then - it was the legendary “Air Jordan” vs. “the Human Highlight Film” - His Airness vs. ‘Nique...

If he Jordan was doing that , I wonder what LBJ was jumping? I've seen that man's jaw above the rim, take a lobs from the top of a backboard, and jumped from the free-throw line in the Olympics.. This was all in his early prime obviously but still

A 6'5" (add an inch for shoes) guard would have to jump 36" to GRAZE their head on the bottom of the backboard. Michael hit the lower-back quadrant of his head on it, and the bottom of the backboard was aligned closer to his mid-neck, based on the video footage. If you look at where he is holding the bag of ice, it's a minimum of 5"-6" inches down the vertical plane measurement of his skull, so even if he had bent his head down and hit that spot on his head at the lowest possible point on the backboard at the most optimal angle, he would've been somewhere between 40" and 43" inches off the ground when his head connected with the backboard. Crazy. That reverse dunk in '88, some of the force is turned into a rotational force, and the foot position on takeoff wasn't optimal for force transfer. Reduced arm mobility and the weight of the ball in hand create additional vectors that reduce the overall efficiency of the jump, yet he still needed to duck to avoid the rim. He's jumping +42" in THAT jump. Reduce to zero the impact of those additional variables and he easily adds 3"-5" to an all-out jump.

We also aren’t taking into consideration Jordan hitting these numbers while dribbling and dunking a basketball-if he were to attempt the jumps without the weight of the ball as well as having to dribble it could add a few more inches to his max jumps.

I believe this clip: ardrink.info/wine/sHSlaKFzrZ3JeZw/fydyw.html shows his vertical at game time. Under the basket is S. Vankovic who won the Euroleague with a block a few years back for Panathinaikos. He is literally non-existent. I'm pretty sure MJ can't recall his name. Of course to dunk like this doesn't take just leap but a strength, handling, etc.

He hit the base of his head on the back board so you have to add those inches so it's really closer to 39'-40' on a long jump.

If you look at it closely he hit his shoulders, but the one for me is the dunk contest where he had to bend his head not to hit the rim. Clearly, he could jump 48" being measured at almost 46" in college is insane.

MJ wasn't special in how high he could jump. There's no photos with his head over the rim. What was unique that I've never seen with any other player was how far he could jump, especially off of two legs, and just kind of float. Like a long jumper in track and field.

@GameChangerRUSS Everyone just about that's done a dunk contest can get their head about as high as his to the rim. Like I said above, what he does that nobody else ever has is how far he could jump. Especially off two feet.

Jordan’s dunk on Clyde drexler in the 92 finals on an in bound play alley oop really shows how high he could jump I think Tim is telling the truth and I think Jordan’s peak was that year

This video literally proves Tim wasn't telling the truth. We have objective evidence of a 46 inch vertical in 1983 (the study at North Carolina). So Tim is lying when he says he was at 38 inches when they met,and he magically raised it to 48. No, he was at 46" BEFORE he ever even met Tim

Good to see an in depth analysis , there is one minor point , the measurement shouldn’t always be taken from your standing height , it’s from your extended foot height / up on your toes . That’s the point the body leaves the ground , it eliminates someone with massive feet having an advantage straight away . I love MJ but i get tired of seeing vids stating he has the highest vert of all time when we see some 6’2” people getting their mouth to the rim , Nate Robinson , spud , Shannon brown , Dave Thompson , all up there as well . MJ Controlling his body via core strength , timing, illusion of body movement all mixed with his abilities made him the best at ‘hang time’ and creativity that’s for sure .
